Painting the Soap Box

I have to get this out of my system.  The way the board in my HOA handled re-painting or re-decorating the community was gone about all wrong.  Mistakes will be made and I know it.  But, don't ask or even bring up the topic unless everyone agrees to interview and hire an expert.  Someone who specializes in both decorating of the exterior of a communtiy as well as the landscaping.  Who will provide multiple visual aids showing several different styles based on the styles and designs used by owners in thier courtyards.  If this cannot be done because of the cost.  Then it should not get done!

The idea of repainting our community was intended to allow owners to have a choice of color schemes.  The ownership was "surveyed" twice.  Both times we were given a choice of two schemes to chose from.  Except, any ballots not questionaires that did not select one of the two schemes or included comments were not counted.  Tell me how a survey which is also a questionaire asking for feedback can elimenate written comments?  Is that because it is a vote and not a "survey"?  I think so!  When it all was said and done the ballots were counted and the board said it was split evenly.  Meaning no color scheme won not once but twice.

The colors ultimately forced upon us were derived from the pool furniture.  Imagine that when the same people who recommended the colors were also looking at remodeling the pool restrooms six years early.  The colors of our pool tile is navy blue and dark brown.  The pool furniture is the closets to those colors, khaki and cream.  So, there is no coinsedence that the colors forced on us to paint the homes are identical to the pool furuniture. What I like to call poop or mud brown with white trim.  Some owners say it feels like living in a military bunker.  I think it was a cop-out because they could not decide.  Then again I don't think that legally a color scheme exists since they technically put it into the memberships hands when we VOTED not once but twice on the matter.

Not everyone lives near the pool or can even see the pool from their homes.  The pool house doesn't have to be the same color as the remainder of the community.  If they and I mean five women on the board at the time, could not decide.  Shouldn't that have been a clue not to change them or to bring in a professional.  I think so, but that is just common sense talking.

When you think of khaki or tan you think of; boring, dull, unfriendly, stuffy, uneventful, conservative, indecisive, inflexible, and military.  The color is so neutral that it forces one persons lifestyle onto another.  The neutrality of the color is more limiting than versatil than one may think.  Khaki pants are worn with a blue jean or chambray, white, or a hunter green button down shirt with brown shoes.  That is it!  Some like pastels with it, but to me it has to many different hues in it to look right with pastels.  To each his own.

We have Spanish style homes with red tile roofs and heavy raw wood beams with brick accents.  The raw wood was or still is for most a very very dark brown.  Covering raw wood beams with white after being painted a dark dark brown for 30 years, is possible.  Except shortly after painting they look like they need repainting agian.  The stain soaked so deep into the wood that the cracks are now accented by the dark brown.  The wood on some of the homes painted about a year ago and already look older than they did before painting.  The only way for this not to happen is to replace all the wood which would be expensive.  This was not thought through very well or any common sense used.  And these women are running for the 2011 board.

It just make no sense to force a lifestyle that doesn't even match the palm trees, flowering trees, flowering shrubs, and flowers used in the community landscaping and courtyard landscaping chosen by owners.  This is not to say that these colors are ugly or lack style in anyway.  I'm just saying that they are reflective of the image of the person who selected them.  For an individual choice they are fine, but on a larger scale they lack versatility and imagination.   They suppress the individual owners freedom of expression and creating a space of their own.  Having the ability to create an environment which they can call their own is one of the reasons people buy a home.  We should not take that away from them by limiting their creativity by forcing colors that reflect another person's image.

A champagne white or candlelight white when used on a textured surface reflects a slightly different color depending on the lighting and position of the sun.  Allowing for versatility for anyone to express their lifestyle beginning from the outside and extending inward.  Allows the colors using in the landscaping to and the style of landscaping selected to flow into the inside of the home.  It allows for the ability to use landscaping to hide undesired features without looking out of place.  It makes small spaces look bigger and opens endless possibilities for creativity.  Using a terracotta colored trim provides the Spanish style architecture and clay tiles, brick, and landscaping to contrast and work together.  Without limiting the owner or taking away from features unique to each home.  Yet, this was rejected!!  Rejected!!  Hell, they didn't even consider painting the homes in a scheme that had a slight hint of sage green with a darker sage as the trim color to cause these large boxes to fade out of site.  These were both schemes in Dunn Edwards Brochure for Spanish Style Homes.  But, they were so focused on the pool that nothing else could be seen or even concieved by them!

Perfect example of why more people must run for Indian Bend Village HOA 2011 board.  The same people who did this are represented multiple times giving them the majority on the board.  We will not have any money left.  The board owes us for the $30,000.00 or $172.00 each for the 2009, surplus.  If there is any surplus from 2010, that is owed to us as well.  Since we did not get the financials or minutes with the meeting information I cannot say how much more is owed.  By Arizona Statues any surplus after reserve contributions are to be refunded back to the membership!  Where is my check!  It cannot be spent if it aint there for them to spend!
